Various changes occur in the female body during pregnancy. These may involve hair, nails and skin. Normally at a time 90% of our hair is growing and 10% of it is in resting phase. After every two to three months the resting hair sheds off and growth phase takes its place. A condition in which excess of hair are lost one to five months after the period pregnancy is known as Telogen effluvium. About 40-50% women suffer from hair loss pregnancy and are not permanent like other conditions. This is not a serious condition and does not cause any bald spots but gradually diminishes after 2 to 3 months of delivery.

Hair loss pregnancy occurs due to the hormonal changes taking place in the body. Estrogen is the commonest hormone causing such changes which is evident by its increased level. After delivery when the levels of hormones go back to normal these changes also revert back. Unusual hair loss pregnancy occurs sometimes. This occurs specifically in two conditions; any disease of thyroid (decreased or increased thyroid hormones) or any vitamin or mineral deficiency. This vitamin or mineral deficiency occurs owing to the fact that these are being used by the developing baby causing their decreased amount in the mother’s body hence leading to their deficiency. Therefore this deficiency should be corrected as soon as possible.

Hair loss pregnancy can become an emotional trauma for the mother therefore it needs to be treated. There are a number of ways which can stop the hair loss pregnancy or make hair healthier such as consulting the physician to check for the hormonal level and balancing it to the

normal level, increasing the growth of hair by intake of fresh fruits and vegetables having antioxidants and flavonoids which protect the hair follicles. By the use of silica containing shampoos and conditioners, abstinence from usage of hair styling products which can pull or cause stress to hair, fine toothed combs to be avoided especially on wet hair, and decreasing the frequent use of hair dryers can also decrease the rate of hair loss.

The diet needs to be balanced and supplemented with proper amount of vitamins and minerals in order to avoid the excessive hair loss pregnancy and nutrition of hair. Vitamin B complex is the most important vitamin to be used for this reason, others used is vitamin C and E, and zinc. However these are the simplest ways by which the hair loss pregnancy can be avoided besides helping a mother to pass the pregnancy period more smoothly.
